About This Video

Have you ever wanted to teach your dog to potty on cue? In this video I walk you through the exact gentle method I use with my Cavaliers (and what I used back in my service dog training days) to teach “go pee pee” and “go poop.” It’s a total game-changer for travel, that last potty break before bed, and those moments when you’re trying to beat a storm and you don’t want to stand outside forever. I start with the easiest win: morning potty, because your dog already really has to go. Even if you have a fenced yard, I recommend clipping your dog to a harness and a leash (about six feet) so you can stay close and control the setup. You’re not roaming the whole yard—you’re hanging out in one spot and waiting for that little “potty move.” Right before your dog starts to pee or poop, you calmly say your cue, then keep your praise low-key so you don’t interrupt them. When they’re finished, that’s when you mark it (yes!), celebrate, treat, and then reward even more with freedom or a walk. One of my biggest tips is: don’t accidentally punish pottying by rushing your dog right back inside. Potty should lead to good things—treats, praise, and then the fun they wanted next—so your dog learns that going quickly is worth it.
