Leash training your Cavalier doesn’t start outside—it starts right in your home. In this video, Stewart and I walk through lesson one of loose leash walking, and the big goal is simple: no tugging on the leash. I’m not looking for a perfect heel here. I’m looking for a Cavalier who can stay connected, keep the leash slack, and learn what I actually want before we add squirrels, sniffs, and everything else that makes outdoor training so hard. I show you exactly how I reward the behaviors I like (especially in the beginning): calmness, attention, and choosing to stay with me. We take just a step or two at first, I mark with “yes,” and I treat. The most important tip? Don’t wait until your dog is pulling hard. The second you feel any tension, stop moving, ask for attention, and don’t go forward until the leash slackens again. From there, you gradually add more steps and then transition to low-distraction outdoor spots—setting your Cavalier up for success instead of throwing them into a busy park too soon.
