If your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel suddenly freezes, backs away, or panics when you pick up the leash, you are not alone. I see this all the time with Cavaliers, especially rescues and sensitive dogs. In this video, I share how I help Cavaliers who are scared of the leash using positive reinforcement and trust-building steps. This is not about forcing your dog to “get over it.” It is about helping your Cavalier feel safe again. Whether your Cavalier is newly adopted, had a scary experience, or has always been hesitant about walks, I will walk you through what leash fear really means and what actually helps. You will learn • What NOT to do if your dog avoids the leash • How to rebuild confidence step by step • How to help a Cavalier who freezes or won’t let you clip the leash • Why slowing down creates faster progress 📞If your Cavalier is scared of the leash and you feel stuck, you do not have to figure this out alone. I offer private phone and Skype sessions where we can talk through your dog’s specific situation, history, and body language, and I can help you create a gentle, realistic plan that feels doable for both of you. 👉 https://cavaliergifts.com/private-dog-training-for-cavalier-king-charles-spaniels/ You are not doing anything wrong. About This Video

If your Cavalier freezes, backs away, or flattens like a pancake when you pick up the harness and leash, I made this video for you. I see leash fear a lot—especially with sensitive Cavaliers, rescues, and even brand-new puppies who just don’t know what the leash means yet. The goal isn’t to force them to “get over it.” It’s to rebuild trust and teach your dog that the harness and leash predict good things, not panic. I walk you through a gentle, step-by-step plan using positive reinforcement. If you can, I recommend starting fresh with a new harness and leash because the old one may carry negative associations (and scent matters). I also show how to “let it live” in the environment so it stops feeling like a scary object that suddenly appears. Then I demonstrate with Dexter how I mark and reward tiny steps: seeing the harness, it moving near them (to the side, not into their face), targeting it, and eventually slipping their head through. Finally, I teach movement with the leash with zero tension—short, easy sessions with tossed treats and “find it”—so your Cavalier learns the leash means fun and safety.
