Dowel joinery is one of the most basic methods out there—cheap, strong, and it’s been around for absolutely years. The catch is simple: with dowels there’s basically no wiggle room, so your holes need to be perfectly positioned in both pieces or the joint just won’t marry up. In this video I stop the guessing and compare three popular doweling jigs I’ve actually been using in my workshop, from the ultra-budget option to a more advanced adjustable system. I start with the Wolfcraft Dowelmaster (around £16), which is a really interesting self-centering design and it can do butt joints, box-style joints, and T connections. But it’s also very easy to slip, clamping it is difficult, and you can’t get mega close to the edge—so you need a steady hand. Then I move to the ENJOYWOOD precision jig (about £52–£53), which is more accurate and flexible, but it’s limited to 15–30mm stock and it kind of forces you into 8mm dowels if you want to drill three holes at once. Finally, my favorite is the DrillPro/ENJOYWOOD 3-in-1 adjustable kit: dead-on accurate, loads of configurations, up to 90mm thickness capability, and five collets for faster work—though it can be pricey and it’s a bit Allen-key happy. My main takeaway: pick the jig that matches how you work, but prioritize accuracy above everything else.
