Welcome to my workshop. In this video I’m building a pair of raised planter boxes that are simple to make, but they’ve got a little twist that makes them look far more “high-end” than a basic square box. The whole design is built around standard plastic flowerpot inserts (40cm and 60cm), and I actually prefer using those inserts instead of plastic foil. I sit the insert on top of the wooden frame so when you water (or when it rains), the water comes off the edge rather than running into the box—better for drainage and durability. I show you how I take measurements straight from the insert, how I find the angle without a big angle finder (just draw it out), and how that works out to an 8° cut. From there it’s just 20mm pine boards, a quick glue-up for the ends, cutting the slats (including matching 8° on the top and bottom slats), sanding from 80 to 120, and assembly with wood glue plus brad nails (but you can use nails or screws if that’s what you have). Then I add 25cm legs cut to the same 8° so everything sits flush, lifting the planter off the ground so it should last longer. I finished mine in black and honestly—they came out absolutely gorgeous.
