About This Video

In this tutorial I paint a simple cherry tree using a line and wash approach, with wet-in-wet watercolour doing most of the heavy lifting. I’m working from a Pixabay reference photo, but I’m only using it as a loose guide—this is all about keeping it beginner-friendly and letting the paint bloom and mingle rather than trying to copy every blossom. I keep the palette really limited, and I focus on timing: getting the paper damp enough so the colour spreads softly, but not so wet that everything turns to soup. I’m using my Sennelier watercolours and just two brush sizes (3 and 6), which is plenty for this kind of tree. I start by placing the main trunk and branches with a simple line, then I build the canopy with soft, dropped-in colour so you get that lovely cherry-blossom feel. If you’re new to wet-in-wet, this is a great exercise because you can practice controlling water, edges, and value without loads of complicated drawing. By the end you’ll have a fresh, loose tree study—and you’ll understand how a few well-chosen washes can create a lot of atmosphere.
