In this video I’m painting “The Spirit of Autumn” — an abstract, impressionistic leaf made completely from imagination. I’m using Derwent Inktense Blocks XL and leaning into what I love most about autumn painting: rich colour, loose mark-making, and that slightly wild, painterly feeling you get when you stop trying to control every edge. This isn’t about producing a perfect, realistic leaf. It’s about letting colour and water do their thing and enjoying the process. I talk you through how I build up layers, push contrast, and create texture so the leaf feels alive on the page. I’m working on a mixed media pad with simple brushes and a water pot, keeping it beginner-friendly and relaxed.
