When a project suddenly becomes urgent, your priorities change fast. Instead of trying to rebuild everything exactly as it was, you’re forced to focus on the small set of decisions that will create the biggest impact. That’s where the 80/20 rule becomes incredibly powerful for business analysts. In this video, I share a real example from a high-pressure system migration where we had to rethink how people joined our email list and accessed our resources. With dozens of opt-ins, links, and follow-ups in place, the original system had become complex and noisy over time. By analyzing the current state data and focusing on what truly mattered, we made a bold simplification that solved multiple problems at once. More importantly, this experience highlights a mindset shift that many business analysts struggle with: treating decisions as experiments instead of permanent commitments. When you frame a solution as something you can test, measure, and refine, it becomes much easier to simplify under pressure and still make smart, data-informed decisions.
