About This Video

You ever wonder how some naturals can go from a silk press right back to healthy curls with no damage? In this video, I’m walking y’all through my exact wash day routine to help my Type 4 hair bounce back after straightening. I start by drenching my hair and giving it a full 5–7 minutes to revert (and yes, I help it along by squeezing water into the strands like, “hey, you’re curly… don’t you forget it”). Then I go in with a clarifying shampoo because after a silk press your hair is coated in heat protectants that literally block humidity and water—so we have to break that down to see our true curl pattern again. After cleansing, I go straight into strength. I use a protein treatment (I like one with enough slip to detangle) to help reform those bonds that got broken down during straightening, and I let it sit 10–15 minutes with my heated cap on the LOW setting because it’s just too convenient to give up. For the next couple weeks post-press, I also add my keratin green tea restructurizer spray for an extra layer of protein. And finally, I keep things low manipulation with my favorite protective style: a wash and go. My key takeaway: clarify, add protein/bonding support, keep manipulation low, and don’t overdo the heat in the first place—healthy hair over everything.
