What books am I reading in Weekly Reading Vlog #91 (BookedonCharity)?

This week I’m reading Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro as my main book, and I’m also picking up Making a Killing by Bonnie Estie for my book club. I started The Turnglass too, but that one is more of a “nibble” read for me right now. I basically rotate a chapter at a time with the slower starters.

Did I like Fourth Wing and what rating did I give it?

Accepted Answer

Yes—again, I gave Fourth Wing five stars. This time it was more about getting back the information I’d forgotten so I can continue the series. I’m not jumping into book two immediately though; I wanted something different first.

What is Ordinary Monsters about and why did it hook me so fast?

Accepted Answer

It’s a historical fantasy set in 1874, and the first page already intrigued me. We start with Eliza escaping abuse, killing the man who kept her captive, and running for her life—so it’s rough, but in that “good for you” way. Then there’s this eerie moment with a glowing blue baby on the train, and I was immediately like, I need to know what’s going on.

Why am I hesitant to start book one of a series without book two?

These days I’m really hesitant because if I hit a cliffhanger, I want to have the next book ready to fall into. If there’s no sequel out yet, I’m fine, but when I know book two exists, it stresses me out. With Ordinary Monsters, I recently got book two (Bringer of Dust), so I feel ready.

What is The Turnglass format and how do you read it?

The Turnglass is printed like two stories in mutual inversion—so you read one side, then flip the book over and read the other from the opposite direction. There are basically two “chapter twos” depending on which side you’re on, which is so cool. I started with the later timeline (1939) and I’m planning to work my way back.

What is Making a Killing by Bonnie Estie about (book club pick)?

Accepted Answer

So far, the two main characters have met and they’re both looking at the same space—one wants to open a bookshop and the other wants to open an eatery. The idea becomes a joint venture for a bookish eatery, and she even has a name for it. The writing is easy, and there are Afrikaans words, but it’s not detrimental if you don’t know them.

Do I use audiobooks and which apps did I mention?

Accepted Answer

Yes, I do—The Turnglass audiobook is on Everand for me, and I also have the Ordinary Monsters audiobook on Libby. That said, with Ordinary Monsters I think I enjoy reading it with my eyes more. I also mentioned my Everand subscription is expiring and I’m still deciding if I’ll continue.

How am I using my reading journal this year?

Accepted Answer

I’m continuing with my old reading journal instead of wasting it, because I barely used it last year. I’m going to log the books I’ve read this year, finish setting up the pages I never completed, and then set up February properly. I’m also trying to be more intentional with my daily diary too.
