In today’s video I’m introducing you to Moose—our new livestock guardian dog puppy and Bear’s future partner on the farm. Moose is a 10-week-old Great Pyrenees (already over 30 lbs and gaining fast), and he comes from generations of working LGDs. After about a year of looking, we finally found a puppy with the right breeding and temperament for our setup: free-ranging birds, Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, horses, a nearby road, and plenty of people passing by. I walk you through the essential things I considered before bringing home a livestock guardian puppy, because this isn’t a “grab a cute pup and hope for the best” situation. For us, breeding was non-negotiable (LGD breed only), and I wanted a breeder who actually knows their puppies and can match temperament to the job. I also explain why we waited until Bear was fully mature before adding a second dog, and how we’re approaching training differently this time—bringing Moose inside at night for house training while still doing short, supervised bonding sessions with the goats during the day. If you’re thinking about getting an LGD, my biggest takeaway is this: set them up for success early with the right genetics, the right exposure before 16 weeks, and a realistic plan for time, patience, and training.
