It was a cold weekend on the farm, so we tackled the big winter goat-pen clean-out (it’ll look perfect for about an hour… and then be a disaster again by tonight). While we worked, I also did a calm, controlled bonding session with Moose in the goat pen—on leash, lots of praise, and making sure he’s aware of the goats without fixating or trying to play. Personal space is required around here, for humans and goats alike. Then I finally gave a full update on what we’re doing with our Nigerian Dwarf herd, because goats have become a huge focus for us alongside the horses. This year we’re transitioning to registered Nigerians with strong pedigrees—championship lines from the U.S. and western Canada—because Ontario’s genetic pool can be limited and we want to avoid inbreeding and improve the breed when we’re breeding. We bred in November (145-ish day gestation), flushed feed ahead of breeding, and brought the vet out around the 40–60 day mark to do herd testing (CAE, Johne’s) and ultrasounds. The ultrasounds aren’t just about “are they pregnant,” they help us estimate due dates, watch for issues, and get a baby count so we can manage labor timelines—especially since our vet is an hour away (or more). We go through each doe and what she’s carrying, including a few surprises, and then we head off to check on Flora and Kate riding.
