In this vlog I’m finally sitting down to introduce you properly to Bear — our 3-year-old livestock guardian dog (Great Pyrenees x Anatolian Shepherd) — and to explain what actually happened the day he got injured and “broke the internet.” We’d just gotten home from a horse show, had a doe close to kidding, and Bear was doing what he always does: parked outside the birthing stall, keeping an eye on his goats. Within minutes we noticed a tiny gash on his chin and that he was favoring a leg, so we rushed him to emerg… and that decision likely saved his life. At the hospital we found out he had internal injuries, including a collapsed/bruised lung and fluid filling his chest faster than they could remove it. It was hour-by-hour for a week, and then two months of strict indoor bed rest (which, if you know LGDs, you know is basically torture for a dog who lives to be with his animals). I also address the hate and misinformation that came with going viral — no, we don’t “make him risk his life,” and no, he’s not roaming the forest alone. I explain why we currently only have one LGD, how we manage predators here in Ontario, and the safety systems (fencing + satellite GPS collar) we use to keep Bear and our livestock as safe as possible.
