If you hike enough, you'll eventually have a "fail" - an adventure you take with a goal you don't make. I've summited Half Dome twice (cables up and down) - but I've been to Half Dome more than twice. Once I went with the hope of getting some footage for an upcoming video, but I did not make it. Instead, I did an epic night hike, came to the aid of two different people were in danger, and saw some absolutely incredible scenery.
