Jetboil has kind of earned a reputation as the Cadillac of backpacking stove systems—fast, simple, reliable, and usually more fuel efficient than the minimalist ultralight stuff. In this video I put the Next-Gen Jetboil Flash 1.8 head-to-head with my own long-time ultralight setup (Soto WindMaster + Toaks 1100ml pot), and then I swap in the Fire Maple Petrel Ultralight G3 HX pot to see how much an integrated heat exchanger can close the gap. I ran a simple boil test: 500ml of water, same (fairly full) canister, weigh fuel before/after, and time from pot-on-stove to boil. The Jetboil Flash 1.8 was blazing—80 seconds and only 3g of fuel. My Toaks + WindMaster combo took 110 seconds and 7g of fuel, and the WindMaster + Fire Maple HX pot hit 90 seconds but still used 6g. The big takeaway is that “worth the weight” depends on your trip and your group. If all you care about is ounces, you need a lot of cooking sessions before the Jetboil’s fuel savings claw back its heavier system weight—especially for solo or short trips. But when you factor in time savings, wind protection, fewer start/stop boils, and comfort features, the Flash 1.8 starts making a lot more sense for couples and small groups (especially when you can split the components).
