About This Video

Growing up in a Nigerian home, aara (akara/bean cake) is one of those foods I can tell you for a fact everybody loves—like people literally stand in a queue by the roadside to buy it, especially on Saturday. So because it’s Saturday, I decided to make this yummy, loved breakfast for my family. At this point, it’s a full tradition in my house—every Saturday my kids already know what’s coming and they look forward to it. In this video, I show you how I make my aara the local way—the street way. It’s simple: wash your beans and peel off the skin while washing. My little secret trick is soaking the beans for about 5 minutes (or even less) before you wash—this helps the skin peel off easily, and it works for me every time. Then I fry it and you can see that beautiful face and the soft inside—honestly, the taste is heavenly. To complete the Saturday breakfast, I paired the aara with akamo (also known as tom brown/pop/ogi). I’ve also processed my pop from scratch, and I have both long form and short form videos showing how to do it. It’s not just for babies—adults can enjoy tom brown too. This is that “chop and sleep” kind of breakfast, my darlings.
