Hi my darlings, in this video I carried you along on my backyard waterleaf farming and I shared the real truth—yes, there is money in farming, but it’s not as “soft” as people think. I explained how waterleaf is a fast-moving vegetable in Nigeria because we cook soups like afang, vegetable soup, okra soup, and we buy veggies almost every time we want to cook. I also showed you the major disadvantage I faced: once grasses take over, waterleaf will suffer badly. You literally see the bed turning into bush, and that happened because I had issues with a dishonest worker and I lost interest for a while—meaning I lost about 3 months in the business. I also showed how we recovered the farm: clearing grasses, trimming overgrown waterleaf, and using the stems to replant so I wouldn’t spend money buying stems again. Then we added manure (organic fertilizer) to make the leaf green and attractive. I went further to warn you as a consumer—there are waterleaf types in the market: the big-leaf “fine” one that is often forced with inorganic fertilizer and turns watery/black quickly, and the healthier organic one that grows within 2–3 weeks. Finally, I broke down payment methods with farmers: the “sharing” method can lead to cheating because farmers know peak periods and market prices, but my preferred method is the renting/percentage method (50/50 or 60/40) where everyone is at peace and the farm is properly maintained.
