About This Video

In Headphone Hoedown Ep. 8, I put the Thieaudio Cypher through my usual routine: unboxing, build/comfort, drivability, and then a full sound breakdown (bass, mids, treble, technicalities, staging) before lining it up against some heavy hitters in this price bracket. The Cypher is an open-back, 50mm dynamic driver headphone launching around the $400 mark (less on Kickstarter early bird), and it’s a pretty bold “studio-tuned” swing from a brand most people associate with IEMs. Linsoul sent it to me for review, and I’m not paid for this—just doing my transparency thing. What stood out immediately is the premium feel: carbon fiber composite headband, steel yokes, machined aluminum cups, and magnetically attached velour pads. I also genuinely like the included carry bag (my wife loved it too), but it’s not crush-resistant unless you keep the foam insert in. The stock cable feels nice but transmits microphonics, so I did most of my listening with an aftermarket cable. Sound-wise, the Cypher lands as smooth, balanced, and quite neutral—tight, accurate bass without “basshead” slam, clear natural mids, and treble that’s pleasant and very smooth rather than sparkly. It’s extremely easy to drive and doesn’t really change character across sources, and it stages/imaging performs at or above average for open-backs around this price. In my comparisons (HD6XX/600-ish family, Aune AR5000, Audeze MM-100, and Focal Elex), the Cypher ends up feeling like the most “middle of the road” balanced option—maybe “plain water” to some, but honestly a really solid tuning if you want reference-leaning listening without fatigue.
