About This Video

Howdy—Audio Amigo here, still hanging out in the APOS room at CanJam New York, and I saved one of the most exciting prototypes for last: the Zenphones. This is another collab with Apos (this time with Southern California Group), and the big hook is that these are fully modular planar magnetic headphones. I’m talking every single component being replaceable and available as replacement parts from the word go—and yes, that includes the drivers. At the show they had two driver “flavors”: an Alpha driver and a Beta driver, with tuning happening at the driver level. I got to look closely at the modular driver units (3.5mm inputs on the bottom, the board, magnet, and that extremely thin planar membrane), and I listened to both. The Alpha came off more reference-style—clean, a bit “wet” to my ears, and not overly exciting. The Beta is the one I preferred: more bombastic and fun. What really gets me fired up is the mod potential—pads are modular too (should fit standard ~100mm pads), and they’re even exploring quicker driver mounting methods like twist-and-lock to make swapping easier. Target price is around $1,500 for now, with options to buy one module or a full set (Alpha/Beta plus a future Gamma). I love the indie headphone space—this is exactly why.
