Y’all Care More About Gear Than The Actual Craft

#photography #cameragear #photographytips I’m ranting in this one, because I’m honestly tired of seeing people push gear like it’s the only thing that matters. Every time a new camera drops, the conversation turns into “You NEED this,” “Your work will change overnight,” “This is the upgrade that will take you to the next level.” Meanwhile, the actual craft gets ignored. In this video, I’m calling out the culture that overhypes gear and convinces creatives that skill doesn’t matter as long as you own the latest body or the most expensive lens. I’m talking about why that mindset is backwards, why it creates unrealistic expectations, and how it distracts people from becoming better photographers and filmmakers. About This Video

In this video I’m ranting a little bit, because the Sony A7 V (and the whole rumor/release cycle) really put something in perspective for me: way too many people in our industry are fixated on gear like it’s the thing that makes the work. Before the announcement, most folks weren’t walking around saying their current camera “can’t get the job done.” They were shooting, booking, creating, and making it work—then a new body drops and suddenly it’s outrage, doom-and-gloom, and unrealistic expectations that every release has to “break barriers.” I talk about how tech always hits a ceiling: big leaps early on, then upgrades become incremental (same way we’ve seen with phones). And if a camera doesn’t have what you want, it’s simple—don’t buy it. I’m a Canon shooter, and I’m going to say what I said in the video: a lot of Sony culture has been gear-first, skill-second, and now that the upgrades are slowing down, some people don’t know what to stand on anymore. My main takeaway is this: focus on the craft. Features like Open Gate are nice to have, but they’re not magic, and most “game-changing” stuff is just convenient—not transformational. Get better at lighting, framing, storytelling, business, and consistency, because that’s what actually levels you up.
