About This Video

Storage is one of the most unglamorous parts of being a photographer/content creator, but it’s non-negotiable. In this video I break down the exact decision and process I used to convert all my Canon RAW files to DNG so I could save space without feeling like I was “letting go” of my files. I’m the type that keeps everything (yes, every RAW since 2013), so when my 4TB photo archive drive was down to 38GB free, I had to do something—without buying another stack of drives right away. I walk through my backup/archiving setup (I keep everything backed up across four separate drives), what I tested in Lightroom, and what the real-world results looked like. For me, DNGs edited the same, looked the same, kept my profiles, and I didn’t run into any issues after a month of using them. I also deleted old JPEGs from when I used to shoot RAW+JPEG (I never used the JPEGs), which saved me almost 200GB. Between deleting JPEGs and converting RAW to DNG, I freed up about 668GB total (including ~450GB from DNG conversion), buying me months before I need more storage. This video is also sponsored by Glyph, and I talk about how the Glyph Blackbox Pro 16TB fits into my workflow: consolidating multiple “category” drives into one faster, rugged, enterprise-style desktop drive so I’m not plugging in three different slow archive drives every time I’m working on a project.
