About This Video

In this episode of On the Record, I sat down with 11-time GRAMMY® Award-winning bassist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Christian McBride at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston. We talked about what keeps jazz fresh (hint: improvisation), why he feels a responsibility to elevate new voices, and what he’s been building with his new group, Ursa Major—featuring Nicole Glover, Eli Perlman, Mike King, and Savannah Harris. Christian also shared a great story about the first record he chose for himself: Wayne Shorter’s “Ju-Ju,” picked from a wall of Blue Note reissues in the mid-80s. Since I’m an audio guy, we went deep on listening at home—especially why vinyl still matters to him. Christian explained that for bass, analog playback can deliver a “true bass effect” that you feel, not just hear, and that earbuds simply can’t replicate. He also talked about taking care of records and systems (even when the speakers aren’t perfect), and why the ritual—liner notes, focused listening, and putting a turntable in the living room—can bring a kind of serenity that’s genuinely good for the soul.
