In this vlog I break down exactly how I landed a six-figure software engineering job straight out of uni at 22, and what I think companies actually look for in new grads. I studied Computer Science at Imperial College London (2018–2022), and the biggest theme is that you need to show genuine interest outside your degree—either through internships or a solid personal project. I walk through my own timeline: first year I didn’t get an internship, so I took a programming tutor role (teaching kids Python/Raspberry Pi stuff) just to have something real on my CV. Second year was the classic LeetCode + exams + applications grind (I applied to ~15–20 companies, got 2 offers), and then COVID cancelled my internship. Instead of giving up, me and my friend built a proper web app: a society management system for Imperial to create events, send invites, track payments, and manage guest lists. My takeaway: if you miss an internship, build something impactful (with numbers/users) and sufficiently challenging (front end + back end + database). Then in third year I applied again (~15–20) and got 4 offers, taking a six-figure-paying 6-month placement which later converted into my full-time role after I graduated in 2022. I also share how I prep for interviews (topic-by-topic LeetCode for ~1.5 months, plus system design practice) and why communication + team fit matters just as much as technical ability—especially now that AI companies and trading firms are pushing the top new-grad salaries.
