I looked at five newborn MCN options: Alva newborn pockets, Bamboo Baby Bum all-in-ones, Bootytoots (now closed), Eco Peach snap-and-wipe style, and Alcamina (reopening as Monarch). Each one has a different setup—pockets, sewn-in absorbency, or snap-in inserts. If you’re mainly looking at value for money with a great design, Eco Peach is the one I kept coming back to.

They’re nice and trim and you can fully customise absorbency because they’re pockets. My issue is the newborn pocket is so tiny that stuffing them is just annoying, especially when you’ve got multiple kids and you don’t want to spend ages prepping nappies. I also regret only buying the microfiber insert for newborn—turns out you often need more absorption than you think.

I personally find those styles way quicker than pockets for newborns.

I prefer velcro for newborns because they change size constantly and it’s so easy to adjust day to day. For older babies, I prefer snaps because they can learn to rip velcro open (and disposables too, honestly). So for newborn stage, velcro is just practical.

What is a “snap and wipe” cloth nappy and do you reuse the shell?

A snap-and-wipe nappy has a wipeable PUL shell and a snap-in insert, so in theory if it’s only a wee you can swap the insert and wipe the shell. Personally, with my son being a heavy wetter, the elastics were always wet, so reusing the shell wouldn’t have worked for us. I still like the system, but I plan inserts for each shell rather than banking on reusing.

Why did you avoid charcoal microfiber lining for newborn nappies?

That charcoal microfiber material irritates my skin, and if it’s uncomfortable for me as an adult, I don’t really want it against my baby’s precious newborn skin. I’m not saying everyone will react the same way—my son doesn’t complain in the one nappy we have. But it’s enough of a personal “no thanks” that I didn’t buy a whole stash of that lining.

The Alcamina/Monarch setup is the most “ready for night” out of what I showed, because it comes with two inserts—a hemp and a bamboo—and together it’s a thick, high-absorbency combo. For Eco Peach, I’d use the standard insert for day and add extra inserts to boost at night. Newborn nights can be a lot, so having boosting options matters.

Are newborn cloth nappies worth buying if they’re only used for a short time?

I do think they’re worth it if you can afford it, because newborn sizing is just so trim and fits beautifully. You can also buy lots secondhand and then resell them again—nappies hold their value reasonably well. For me, it’s an investment, especially when you’re planning more than one baby.
