About This Video

In this video I’m sharing what’s in my hospital bags for birth—Australian edition—because I genuinely didn’t realise until recently how different our system is compared to America. I’d been watching heaps of US “what to pack” videos and assumed the hospital would provide a bunch of postpartum bits (like the mesh undies), but in Australia (especially in the public system with Medicare) you’re not paying for the birth… and that often means you’re expected to bring most of your own supplies. I show you two bags: my bag and baby’s bag. In my bag I’ve packed things like my blue book, a peri bottle (I grabbed one online), witch hazel for postpartum pads (and I’ll use it as a toner too), a mix of cloth pads and disposable maternity pads, hydrogel breast discs, breast pads (cloth + a disposable sample), a postpartum electrolyte/vitamin drink sachet, hand sanitiser, and a simple roll-on deodorant that won’t overpower baby’s sense of smell. I also keep clothes practical—comfy underwear that’ll hold a pad, a robe, socks, leggings, and basic bras (I’m not bothering with maternity bras). For baby, I’ve packed a knot gown, a Wondersuit, a singlet, hats, socks, a Velcro swaddle, blanket, muslin, a wet bag, and disposable nappies for hospital. I also chat about why I’m not taking dummies to the hospital, and my thoughts on wipes and biodegradability.
