About This Video

In this video I’m walking you through our cloth nappy cleaning routine (middle of summer, fan and all). I’m using pocket nappies in newborn size at the moment, with microfiber inserts. Microfiber is fine for tiny newborn wees, but it’s not great once babies get bigger because it can get compression leaks—so when we move into one-size-fits-most, I’ll be swapping to bamboo inserts (and sometimes double-stuffing if we need it). For now, I also boost with a little terry wash cloth at the end to help make things more leak-proof. For washing, the main resource I follow is Clean Cloth Nappies, and I’ve linked their website, the “building your routine” guide, and the Facebook support group. My basic flow is: separate inserts, rinse as needed, and make sure you’ve got enough items for agitation (your machine should be at least three-quarters full—so I throw in any vomit/poop-covered clothes too). I do two washes: a quick pre-wash with detergent + booster, then a long main wash that’s hot (I use 60°C) and over an hour. After that, I hang everything out to dry—avoiding sun on the covers because it can damage the PUL—and honestly, you shouldn’t need sun bleaching if your routine is solid.
