About This Video

Somewhere along the way, the internet decided heat protectants are a scam—especially when the product is “just” a leave-in conditioner. So I went full detective mode. In this video, I break down what heat actually does to hair (protein + lipid damage, cuticle cracking, increased friction, breakage, and even curl pattern changes at high temps), and then I walk through how heat protectant claims are tested in the real world. I pulled info from research papers, a TRRI Princeton lecture led by a PhD scientist, and I also spoke to an attorney to understand what brands are legally required to have on hand to back up heat protection claims in the US. Then I reached out to the brands behind the heat protectants I recommend to ask how they validate claims like “protects up to 450°F.” Across multiple companies, the testing methods were surprisingly consistent: things like DSC (to measure keratin denaturation/thermal stability), repeated grooming/breakage testing, tensile strength testing, and thermal imaging. My biggest takeaway: no, leave-ins aren’t automatically “fake” heat protection—if a product claims heat protection, the claim is what matters, not the name on the bottle. And technically, you don’t have to layer a second heat protectant after blow drying, but I’ll explain why I sometimes still do (wet hair clumps = less even coating).
