About This Video

In this episode, I’m (Richard) dragging Austin through my totally ironclad, absolutely-not-sarcastic list of the “only 14 sci-fi subgenres that exist.” We’re breaking down what makes each one work, what makes it fall flat, and—if you’re a reader—where you should start based on what you already like. If you’re an author, this is basically us handing you the cheat sheet of what we personally vibe with (and what makes us bounce off). We kick off with near-future sci-fi, where the big win is how relatable it is—because it’s basically our world with a plausible tech nudge—but the big risk is you’ve got to get the science right. Then we hit space opera, the fantasy-to-sci-fi gateway drug: massive scope, massive payoffs, but also massive books and the danger of feeling like “epic fantasy with spaceships.” After that we get into the “punks,” especially cyberpunk—my personal nightmare-future comfort read—where the vibe is gritty, cynical, and feels like the end of history. And then we land on Austin’s favorite: first contact. It’s endlessly re-readable because it instantly forces the best sci-fi questions—what makes a human, how culture and biology shape us, and what happens when we meet something truly different. We also touch cosmic horror sci-fi (hard balance: mystery vs clarity) and humor/satire (absurd situations that still need a point).
