In this episode, I break down what being a good beta reader actually means—because your job isn’t to “fix” someone’s book, it’s to report what worked and what didn’t work for you. Austin and I talk through our own beta reading experiences, from helping out on published projects like Andrew Givler’s Ironbound work to swapping manuscripts in writing groups. The big theme: humble yourself. It’s not your story, and the fastest way to become a bad beta reader is trying to rewrite the book into what you would do instead. We get into the practical stuff authors and readers both mess up: not clarifying what kind of feedback the author even wants, getting way too stuck on tiny copy-editing nitpicks, and giving vague drive-by notes like “the pacing is off.” If you’re going to say pacing is off, tell me where you got bored—where you mentally clicked off. Same with characters: “this character doesn’t work” is useless unless you explain what isn’t landing and why. We also talk honesty (real honesty, not “it’s great!” honesty), how to point out what’s working so authors don’t delete their best scenes, and why picking the right beta readers matters. If someone doesn’t like your genre or tropes, their feedback can be well-intentioned…but still actively unhelpful.
