About This Video

In this episode, Richard and I try to answer a deceptively spicy question: what’s the genre that’s truly “for everyone”? Not “what do we personally read the most” (because, yes, we live in fantasy and sci-fi), but what genre either casts the widest net or lands the most even demographic spread across age, sex, and culture. We do the classic “say it at the same time” thing… and immediately disagree: I come in hot with Children’s Fiction, and Richard plants his flag in Thriller. My case for children’s fiction is basically: it breaks barriers. I pulled a stat that out of 2.6 billion books sold, about 1 billion were children’s fiction (a massive chunk), and then I connected it to Tolkien’s whole defense of “fairy stories” being worthy of adults too. Great children’s stories (think Pixar—Wall‑E, Up, Ratatouille, Coco) hit universal themes like family, memory, and hope, and they’re written with adults in mind as well. Richard’s thriller argument is more about neutrality: thrillers tend to hit closer to 50/50 men and women, span age groups, and show up across cultures—without needing the “suspension of disbelief” hurdle that turns some people off fantasy and sci‑fi. We end up realizing we’re answering two different versions of the same question… and that’s where the real debate lives.
