About This Video

In this episode, I’m planting the flag: character development isn’t necessary. It’s nice—most of the time it’s even preferred—but it’s not a requirement for a great story. We break down the difference between dynamic characters (who change) and static characters (who stay basically the same), and then we focus on the real question: how do you make a static protagonist actually compelling instead of boring? For me, it comes down to a few tools. One is depth through history: even if the character doesn’t “arc,” the reader can keep discovering who they are, and that discovery feels like movement. Another is motivation: if a character’s wants and flaws drive the plot with consistency (think anxiety-fueled chaos like Uncut Gems), I’m locked in. And the big one: sometimes the main character is the lesson of the story, not the student—where the world changes around them because they’re a monolith in their convictions (Discworld is incredible at this). We also talk about static villains, episodic/serialized storytelling, and the main warning label: if you don’t test a static character hard enough, you lose tension and it gets way too comfortable.
