About This Video

When I’m out walking and I see an unstable dog ahead, I don’t want to “hope for the best.” I want a plan—and one of my favorite plans is an emergency U-turn. In this video I show you how I teach that skill in a positive, practical way with Wallace (a Malinois/German Shepherd mix) so you can quickly and calmly change direction when you need to. The goal is simple: when I say “this way,” my dog thinks, “Whoa—things are moving fast, I need to lock in and follow you.” I start by reviewing the basics in the real world, not just at home. I use a lot of body language and often lure with my hand or finger, building from slower, “wait, what do you want?” turns into more abrupt, confident pivots. I mark and reward the moments my dog checks in with me, and I’ll even trot or run a couple steps if that helps my dog tune in. The big takeaway is that I’m guiding my dog—not dragging them away or using leash corrections—so we can create a reliable, upbeat escape hatch for walks when something feels unsafe.
