About This Video

I was out practicing with Inertia on a baseball field when I suddenly heard an urgent, “Zack, grab Inertia.” I didn’t even look first—I just got control of her immediately. When I did look up, I realized why everyone was panicking: a moose was running loose with an American flag draped over his eyes, basically blind and in a full state of panic. That’s an extraordinary situation, and a panicked moose is not something you want to “test” your luck around. We took cover in the dugout while the moose kept bumping into fences and barricades, which only escalated his stress and unpredictability. In that moment, the training mattered: right before I grabbed her, I told Inertia “stay,” then picked her up and kept her quiet. This is exactly why I practice emergency stays and recall with distractions—because real life doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. I can’t help but think our work training around big distractions (like mules in New Orleans) helped her stay composed here. The takeaway is simple: train for the unexpected, prioritize safety, and don’t assume wildlife encounters will be “normal.”
