When a dog “refuses” treats or won’t engage with their favorite toy, it usually isn’t stubbornness—it’s information. In this video I’m out at the dog park with Wallace (a Malinois/German Shepherd mix) showing you what’s really going on when your dog is too interested in, or overwhelmed by, the environment to focus on you. I come prepared with high-value treats and a couple brand-new toys because short games like tug or fetch can help your dog re-engage, but the biggest clue is this: if your dog normally takes treats and suddenly won’t, they’re likely over threshold. I walk you through two practical fixes you can use in the moment. First, increase distance from the distraction (like other dogs) until you find the line where your dog can actually think and respond again. Second, sometimes your dog just needs 5–10 minutes to absorb and observe—especially young dogs who are processing new smells, sights, and sounds. I also talk about reading body language and taking your dog’s cues: pulling away, barking, and struggling to disengage are signs you need to help them “recalibrate.” Once your dog is under threshold, then the reward has to be worth it—and your dog gets to decide what’s reinforcing.
