On walks, stuff happens fast—like rounding a corner and suddenly there’s an unstable dog, or something your dog is about to fixate on. In this video I show you how I train an emergency U-turn (“this way”) so you can quickly and calmly change direction without dragging your dog, yelling, or relying on leash corrections. The goal is simple: when I say “this way,” my dog thinks, “Holy cow, I better pay attention because things are moving fast.” I start by reviewing the basics in a new environment and using what I’ve already built through heel and loose leash work—getting my dog to follow my hand/finger and stay engaged with me. Early reps are slower because your dog is figuring out the game, but as they understand it, I encourage a more abrupt, decisive turn. I use body language, luring if needed, and I’ll even trot or run a couple steps to help my dog tune in. The big takeaway is that I’m guiding attention and movement, marking the moment my dog looks at me, and building a skill that helps prevent reactions before they start.
