When you’re walking your dog in public, there are a bunch of “unwritten rules” that can make the difference between a calm, successful walk and a stressful one. In this video, I break down how the leash itself can change a dog’s behavior—just that restriction or tension can make even friendly dogs feel tense and react differently. So I show you my real-world protocol: shorten the leash without adding tension, don’t let your dog cross in front of you when passing triggers, and use your body as a buffer so you’re between your dog and whatever you’re passing. I also talk about something I think gets missed a lot: this walk is for your dog. I’m not asking for a strict heel the whole time. I like using a 10-foot leash so my dog can explore, sniff, and take in the environment—while still practicing the skills we need in the real world, like moving along when it’s not appropriate to stop. We also prepare for the stuff that catches people off guard: off-leash dogs in leashed areas, reading other handlers’ cues (like someone crossing the street), and even the vulnerable moment when you have to pick up poop—because that’s when you’re distracted and your dog needs a practiced stay. Ultimately, it all comes down to respect: public spaces belong to everyone, and good leash manners help all of us share them.
