Resource guarding can feel scary—especially when your dog is growling, freezing, or snapping over a bone, food, toys, or even you. In this video, I work with Wallace and show you why “reaching in and taking it” is not advisable, and how to prevent guarding by changing what the situation means to your dog. Guarding is natural behavior, so instead of trying to prove a point, I focus on helping the dog feel safe enough to disengage. I demonstrate a simple, proactive approach: trade up with something high value (in our case, real chicken) and watch the right things—not whether chicken “beats” the bone, but whether your dog can look away, move without tension, and choose to leave the item without feeling threatened. If your dog can’t disengage and starts to freeze or hover, that’s critical feedback: don’t push, rush, or flood your dog. In an emergency, I show how to toss irresistible treats away from the guarded item to create space and safely remove it. And here’s a big takeaway: giving the item back matters. Returning the bone teaches your dog that leaving something doesn’t automatically mean losing it, and trust comes from staying under threshold—not from controlling your dog’s stuff.
