The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body - it exits your lower spine, runs through your glutes, travels down the back of your leg, and reaches all the way to your foot. When that nerve gets compressed or irritated - by a disc, bone spur, or tight muscle - you get that burning, shooting, electric pain known as sciatica. It can show up as lower back pain, hip pain, leg pain, or even foot numbness. WHY DO I GET SCIATICA? Many things can cause irritation to this never, but the vast majority of sciatica cases come from one of two sources: a herniated or bulging disc pressing on the nerve root in your lower spine, or spinal canal narrowing (stenosis) that compresses the nerve. Knowing your cause matters, because the right sciatica treatment looks completely different depending on what's actually irritating the nerve in the first place.
