NotebookLM Flashcards Update (What Changed + Why It Matters)

Have you been frustrated with NotebookLM resetting your flashcards to the beginning every time you take a break? It used to be that if you stepped away to check a source or—heaven forbid—grab a coffee, you'd have to click through 50+ cards just to find your spot again. Google has finally rolled out a series of updates that make these flashcards behave like a real study tool instead of a static list. The Flashcard Mastery Blueprint - Persistent Progress: The system now holds your place. You can switch notebooks, close your browser, or research a new topic, and your deck will remain on the exact card where you left off. - The Shuffle Toggle: You are no longer stuck in a fixed sequence. You can now randomize the deck at any time to prevent order memorization. - Precision Deletion: If NotebookLM generates a card that’s irrelevant or based on a source you no longer need, you can delete that individual card without nuking the entire deck. - Targeted Re-runs: After finishing a set, you can now choose to practice only the cards you missed. This allows you to focus strictly on your knowledge gaps rather than wasting time on what you already know. A few thoughts: - It's a big deal because sometimes you don't have the time or desire to go through 59 flashcards... it was frustrating for people that it would always go back to the beginning. - Note that while you can delete individual cards, this feature is currently restricted by your notebook access level. If you are working in a shared notebook where you don't have full administrative rights, the "Delete" and "Shuffle" options in the ellipsis menu may be unavailable.
