For a long time, the beauty of Google NotebookLM was its isolation. If the answer wasn't in your sources, it simply said "no." Now, a new Fast Research feature in the chat panel is blurring that line. It automatically searches the web when your sources come up empty, often without you asking first. This can lead to a cluttered workspace and 10+ unwanted sources you didn't ask for. The Source-Cleanliness Blueprint: - Add Sources: Chat only works if at least one source is selected. - Fast Research: If you ask a question outside your data (like asking an old book about current Linux versions), NotebookLM triggers "Fast Research." - Review What It Found: View the "Discovery" panel to see the web sources it found. - Then Clean-Up: Uncheck all discovered sources and select "Delete without importing" to prevent your notebook from becoming filled with random web links or add the sources you like. My thoughts: - Google is blurring the line of what it means to be a grounded tool. - It used to be 'too bad, it's not in your sources.' Now, it just does it... and it can be pretty easy to miss. - One of my biggest frustrations? There currently isn't a toggle in the settings to turn this off. You have to go through the extra exercise of deleting discovered sources just to keep your research pure. ✨ Join the cohort at the next NotebookLM Masterclass → https://maven.com/thoughts-brewing-llc/learn-notebooklm-in-a-weekend-2-cohort 🌟 Request a video: https://thoughtsbrewing.com/en-us/youtube-video-request-page?utm_source=youtube #NotebookLM #GoogleAI #ResearchWorkflow #AIQuickTips #ThoughtsBrewing ➡️ See what's brewing inside the Next-Level AI Workshop: https://thoughtsbrewing.com/en-us/next-level-ai-workshops?utm_source=youtube ➡️ Stop guessing and start doing—subscribe for more tips: https://www.youtube.com/@thoughtsbrewingllc ➡️ Read the blog for deeper AI insights: https://thoughtsbrewing.com/en-us/blog-subscription?utm_source=youtube Timestamps 0:00 - What is the new Fast Research feature in NotebookLM chat? 2:33 - How does the web search trigger in NotebookLM chat? 4:00 - How do you view discovered web sources in NotebookLM? 5:23 - How do you delete sources without importing them? 5:54 - Is there a setting to turn off auto Fast Research in NotebookLM? 6:10 - Recap: Fast Research Auto Triggers in NotebookLM Keywords NotebookLM Fast Research, Google AI updates, grounded AI research, NotebookLM tutorial, AI research tools, workflow automation, NotebookLM limitations, web search in NotebookLM, AI troubleshooting, Thoughts Brewing, AI Quick Tips, Damien Griffin, NotebookLM, Google NotebookLM, NBLM, NBLM Fast Research, Google AI, Google Labs, AI research, AI fast research, NotebookLM Auto Fast Research, Unwanted sources in NotebookLM, Deleting sources in NotebookLM
