Claude + Blender Update

If you are like me, you may be worried that your favorite open-source 3D tool is about to be swallowed by a generative AI giant. After a wave of concerns (to put it mildly), the Blender Foundation released a major update on May 1st that shifts the entire dynamic. We’ll look at why the original deal felt a bit too corporate and what this reversal means for the future of your workflow. The Open-Source Safeguard Blueprint: - The Patronage Pivot: Blender is officially shifting Anthropic from a "Corporate Patron" to a "Singular Donation" status. - Access Denied: By removing the Patron tier, Anthropic loses direct board access and dedicated developer liaisons. - The "Humans Only" Pledge: The Foundation has explicitly stated that no generative AI functionality is currently planned for core Blender integration. - Funding vs. Influence: Understanding how Blender plans to stay free and open-source without letting big tech steer the annual grant planning. I'll share some of my thoughts on this: - Patron levels usually allow companies to weigh in on how their money is spent. In a tool as complex as Blender, that influence can quickly look like a shift toward AI-first development that the community never asked for. - When software shifts to AI-first, the core mechanics usually change.
