Canva’s New AI Tool Fixes a Big Problem With Flat Images

Frustrated with generating the perfect infographic in NotebookLM or Gemini, only to realize there’s a typo or a color that clashes with your brand? It’s a specific kind of exhaustion when you have to scrap an image because it’s a flat, uneditable file. If you’re spending more time redrawing almost-right AI outputs than it would take to do them manually, this workflow is for you. I'll show you my test of Canva’s new Magic Layers tool. It scans static PNGs and "unflattens" them, allowing you to move elements, change text, and fix colors in seconds. The Unflattening Blueprint: - The Export Rule: Download your AI-generated infographic or image as a PNG (works with NotebookLM and Gemini Nano Banana). - Trigger the Scan: Upload to Canva and select Magic Layers under the Magic Studio menu. - The Element Audit: Mouse over the image to see which pieces (text, icons, backgrounds) the AI has identified as editable layers. - The Refinement Step: Double-click to fix typos, swap brand colors, or delete elements that don't fit your presentation. My thoughts I'll share with you: - The Format Wall: Magic Layers currently only supports four image formats (PNG, JPG, HEIC, and SVG). If your tool exports as a WebP or PDF, you’ll need to convert it first. - The Usage Allowance: This isn't a truly free tool. Every scan counts toward your monthly AI usage allowance. - Not a Full Deconstruction: Don't expect to edit every single pixel. For example, in my complex steak infographic, I could change the pan color, but I couldn't separately edit the butter on top of the steak.
