Drowning in a sea of unnamed sources inside your favorite notebook is a special kind of exhaustion when you have to scroll through 50+ files just to find that one specific source. Google finally added an Auto-Label feature to NotebookLM to help clean up the mess. However, as I found out while testing this across three different account tiers, the rollout is anything but consistent. If you’re staring at your sidebar and don't see the new icon, you’re likely hitting one of Google’s invisible requirements. The Source-Cleanliness Blueprint: - The Fresh Start Rule: You likely need to create a brand-new notebook. Existing notebooks didn't trigger the tool during my tests. - The Five-Source Trigger: The "Auto-label by topic" icon won't appear until you have at least five sources. - Organize: Click the icon in the upper-left of the source window to let NotebookLM categorize your data into topic buckets. - Renaming: Click the ellipsis on a category to rename the label (though be prepared, as the UI can be a bit finicky on the first try). - Bulk Selection: Use the new category headers to select or deselect entire groups of sources for your chat context. A few thoughts: - As of the end of April 2026, you cannot manually drag a source from one label to another. It is an all-or-nothing auto-sort for now. - Ironically, this feature is currently live on Free accounts but was missing from my Plus and Pro (Workspace) accounts. Google is likely A/B testing this. - The rename feature sometimes fails to take on the first attempt. If it doesn't save, try deleting the text and re-typing it. ✨ Join the cohort at the next NotebookLM Masterclass → https://maven.com/thoughts-brewing-llc/learn-notebooklm-in-a-weekend-2-cohort 🌟 Request a video: https://thoughtsbrewing.com/en-us/youtube-video-request-page?utm_source=youtube #NotebookLM #GoogleAI #ResearchWorkflow #AIQuickTips #ThoughtsBrewing ➡️ Next-Level AI Workshops: https://thoughtsbrewing.com/en-us/next-level-ai-workshops?utm_source=youtube ➡️ Watch "Why Your NotebookLM Source Turned Red" → https://youtu.be/efLYQiedmE8?si=TdOzM6IqkYaTEa2j ➡️ Make your day easier→ SUBSCRIBE for more tips: https://www.youtube.com/@thoughtsbrewingllc ➡️ Get the stuff I don't say on camera (follow the blog): https://thoughtsbrewing.com/en-us/blog-subscription?utm_source=youtube Timestamps 0:00 - How do you find the new NotebookLM auto-label feature? 2:10 - How does NotebookLM categorize sources? 2:55 - Can you rename or add emojis to Auto-Labeled sources? 3:36 - Can you move sources between labels in NotebookLM? 4:04 - How do you add new labels to your sources in NotebookLM? 4:45 - What does Reorganize Sources & Return to List do in NotebookLM? 5:48 - Why is auto-labeling missing from Pro and Plus accounts? 8:35 - Recap: How to use auto-labeling of sources in NotebookLM Keywords NotebookLM Auto Label Sources, NotebookLM, Google NotebookLM NotebookLM tutorial 2026, source organization, Google Labs experiments, research automation, digital knowledge management, NotebookLM auto-labeling, document sorting AI, workflow friction fix, AI source grounding, Google AI, Google Labs, AI Quick Tips, Thoughts Brewing, Damien Griffin, Sort Sources in NotebookLM, NotebookLM Source Organization
