In this trip I took John out into the Idaho backcountry on a tracked Honda Pioneer to hunt down snow (which has been weirdly elusive this year) and finally put a new hot tent setup to work. We’re not doing extreme survival or storm camping here—just honest winter camping with high-end gear in good conditions—so you can see what this kind of “luxury winter” setup is actually like when you’re cooking, hanging out, and trying to stay comfortable for those long dark hours. The main test is the Nortent Gamme 8 PC (poly-cotton) and Nortent’s foldable titanium stove with a roll-up pipe. I walk through setup (spoiler: those poles are comically long), show the little design details I genuinely appreciate—ventilation, glow-in-the-dark bits, beefy reinforcements, and all the guy-out points—and I also call out what I’d change. The tent feels top-notch, but it’s not the easiest pitch, and the darker fabric makes it feel cave-like. The stove impressed me with airflow control and vibes (windows on all sides), but in a tent this big it mostly “takes the edge off” instead of getting you hot-and-toasty. If you’ve got the budget and you actually winter camp, it’s a buy-once-cry-once setup. If you’re mostly a summer camper, I don’t think you’ll get your money’s worth.
