About This Video

Today I’m taking a proper look at the Yard-O-Led “The Pocket” fountain pen in the Barley Wave finish—an English-made, sterling silver pocket pen with brass elements and an 18 karat gold nib. Yard-O-Led were kind enough to send this out for me to review, and I also got to chat with Molly in Birmingham about the brand’s history. This is a company with around 200 years of heritage (going right back to the “yard of lead” origin), and you really feel that blend of tradition and modern relaunch energy in this pen. I walk through the packaging, the materials (925 sterling silver, brass section/ends, enamel coin, gold nib), and the practical design choices—like the twist cap that comes off in about 3/4 of a turn, and the fact it’s a cartridge/converter pen that needs a short solution (I used a Kaweco foldable converter). I also cover the realities: it’s a luxury price point (£695), it will patina/tarnish over time (which I personally love), and it’s genuinely a pocket pen—short unposted, but really comfortable posted. Then I finish with a writing sample and my take: a smooth, reliable everyday medium nib that isn’t overly wet, wrapped up in something that feels like a practical tool and a piece of jewellery at the same time.
