About This Video

In this review I’m taking a close look at the Benu Tribute “Darwin” fountain pen — a pen I genuinely think is very, very beautiful. I walk through the new, simpler premium packaging, what you get in the box (including the long cartridge and the converter already in the pen), and then get into the design details that make this one stand out: that khaki-green-on-the-site-but-more-teal-to-my-eye base, the warm golden/rosy shimmer, a streak of burgundy, and that translucent amber/tobacco material that I really, really enjoy. I cover the parts and features (faceted/fluted cap, springy clip, twist cap at about 2 and 3/4 turns, minimal step-down, and a tapered section) and then talk size, weight, and balance — including the big thing to know: posted, the pen feels back-weighted because about half the weight is in the cap. Unposted though, it’s absolutely wonderful. On paper I’m using a No. 6 Schmidt medium nib with SB Brown ink, and the nib is smooth, wet, reliable, and effortless under its own body weight. At $210 USD it’s not inexpensive for a steel-nib cartridge/converter pen, but between the writing performance, finishing, and that sense of luxury, I think you’re getting bang for your buck — as long as you’re happy to write unposted.
