For the first time in about 5–6 years, I bought a new camera: the RED V-Raptor XE 8K Vista Vision. Normally I’m not the guy who impulse-buys a camera body without watching a ton of tests and hearing everyone’s pros/cons first—especially when there’s not much out there on a brand new model. But I was due for an upgrade, and I kind of just said “f it” and swiped my card. The first thing that blew my mind was the size. Coming from the OG RED days (and even owning the Komodo), it’s wild how small this thing is while still packing in serious capabilities. This video is really about the “why” from a filmmaking business perspective. I’m not trying to do a deep tech-spec breakdown. I’ve been on the OG RED Komodo for years because I wasn’t doing as many production jobs and I wanted something compact for travel. But I’ve been shooting more recently—short films, a new docu series—and I’m about to leave for a massive two-week campaign in Malta where the client specifically wants that bigger sensor / open-gate style flexibility for reframing deliverables across social, web, and YouTube. When I looked at what we’d spend renting a camera overseas for two weeks, it just made sense to buy the brain (especially since I already own a bunch of RED ecosystem accessories). This is going to be my new workhorse moving forward, and I’ll follow up with real-world pros/cons and footage once I’m back.
