About This Video

This video is basically my bro-to-bro reminder: put the gimbal down sometimes. We’re in an era where everything is dominated by frenetic camera movement, and it’s easy to forget how powerful a simple tripod shot can be. Some of the most emotionally resonating images in film history come from stillness—because stillness allows a scene to breathe. It invites your audience to actually watch what’s happening, instead of being dragged around by the camera. I break down why I believe every camera movement and angle should serve a purpose (shoutout Roger Deakins: “When you move the camera, it’s got to mean something.”). On a recent gig shooting stock footage for a luxury travel agency, I intentionally leaned into static frames—like 90% tripod—so the audience could witness the destination and experience the location the same way our talent was. I also point to examples like No Country for Old Men’s gas station scene and Kubrick’s locked-off symmetry in The Shining to show how stillness can build tension and make what happens inside the frame hit harder. The takeaway: don’t move the camera because it “looks cool”—choose movement (or no movement) based on what the story actually needs.
