In this video, I break down the difference between pedagogy and heutagogy in a way that’s actually useful for lesson planning—not just theory for theory’s sake. Pedagogy is the more traditional, teacher-directed approach: I decide the goals, the pathway, the content sequence, and I guide learners through it. It’s especially common in K–12 and any context where learners need more structure, scaffolding, and explicit teaching. Heutagogy, on the other hand, is self-determined learning. The learner has much more control—not only over how they learn, but often what they learn, why they’re learning it, and how they’ll demonstrate it. My role shifts from “instructor” to “designer, coach, and facilitator,” creating the conditions for autonomy, reflection, and real-world application. The key takeaway I want you to leave with: this isn’t an either/or battle. I see it as a spectrum—use pedagogy when learners need direction, and move toward heutagogy when you want independence, ownership, and lifelong learning skills to kick in.
