In this video, I break down geragogy vs pedagogy through the lens of educational neuroscience—because “good teaching” isn’t one-size-fits-all across the lifespan. Pedagogy is typically how we design learning for children (more guided, structured, teacher-directed), while geragogy focuses on teaching older adults where experience, motivation, and brain changes with age matter. I also briefly situate this alongside andragogy, so you can see the full continuum: children, adults, and older learners. From a brain-based learning perspective, I focus on what tends to shift with age—processing speed, working memory load, attention, and retrieval—and what doesn’t: the capacity to learn through neuroplasticity. The takeaway is practical: if you’re training mature learners, you don’t “dumb it down,” you design it smarter. I share how to adjust pacing, reduce cognitive load, use more meaningful context and prior knowledge, and build in retrieval practice and repetition without making it feel childish. If you teach online, hybrid, or in-class, these small design choices can make your lessons dramatically more effective for older adults while still keeping the learning respectful and empowering.
